Let’s take a look your staff –

Getting to know your staff’s gifts aka their strong points is a powerful exercise.

You can begin by learning what makes each staff member feel the most impowered,  what are their favourite treatments to do, what could they talk under water about, what special skills do they have, this could be anything from foot massage to looking at sales reports, cleaning the bathroom or making other team members feel loved and included – it all counts.

Once you know your staffs super powers, take some time to really understand them and how you can incorporate them more into their day to day position in the salon so they can really shine.

You can then take 15 to 30 minutes with each staff member individually to go over their strengths and discuss ways that they can become more involved in the business.

Each staff member will have a gift you can utilize in some way.

Systemization — spend time with them building on and improving your salon systems. Not only will your systems improve but that staff member will feel a sense of ownership within that work and therefore help implement such systems with the rest of the team.

Beautification — allow that staff member to add some creative flair and love to your reception area and treatment rooms. There may be something they have been itching to do for ages that they can now feel comfortable to dive into. Offer them some creative control. This will leave them feeling a sense of contribution, ownership and fulfillment.

The more ownership your staff feel the happier they will be and the longer they will stay. Ownership does not mean taking control, removing you as the owner from decisions or ANY kind of disrespect, it just means they feel more involved, more connected and more committed to the success of your business.

During your meeting take 5 to 10 minutes discussing a rewards system. Find out what makes them tick.

Would they like to go out for a team dinner every 6 weeks?

Would they like to have staff drinks one afternoon a fortnight?

Would they like to receive gift vouchers as recognition (and what kind of gift vouchers)?

Would they like a bottle of champagne?

Would they like cash bonuses?

Dive into the psyche of each staff member and find out what is going to motivate them and what is going to make them feel like they are a part of your salon family.

It’s also important to recognize your staff for their successes!

Here are some staff recognition ideas

Group Facebook message — celebrate staff members that have done well that day or week — write in the group so everyone can see. (if you have a FB group or a WhatsApp group)

Team dinners — buy a bottle of wine or two for the table (your shout) all drinks after that are paid for individually.

Monthly recognition gifts for — Highest sales, best customer service, best team work, effort to improve product or service knowledge, no sick days, early every day, best rebooking rate, implementing community vibe, clinic tribe.

Also don’t forget birthdays or work anniversaries.

Make your staff feel like they are really part of a TEAM. Help them feel recognized and that their efforts are seen and appreciated.

This may take extra work for you, but the result you get is worth every ounce of effort. Your staff will start to look towards the same goals as you, they will see the bigger picture and have a stronger relationship with your business. This means if you go away they still feel a sense of ownership and contribution.
